Gather a few clean tools
Have a soft dust-removal tool, clean lint-free cloths, a compatible cleaner and a towel to catch drips. A suitable squeegee can help if the glass instructions permit it.
Keep one cloth for the dirty frame or track and another for the pane. Start with clean tools; a cloth carrying grease can leave a new smear each time you wipe.

Clean accessible window tracks first
Remove loose dry debris from the reachable track using a suitable soft brush or vacuum attachment. Avoid pushing dirt into drainage openings.
Wipe accessible surfaces using the frame manufacturer’s permitted method. Keep moisture controlled; don’t flood the track or poke tools through unseen channels.
If water stays in the track or a drainage opening looks blocked, check the window instructions or arrange an assessment. Leave dismantling and repairs to someone qualified for the job.
Clean the glass in four steps
1. Remove loose dirt
Lift dust gently before wet wiping. Don’t grind gritty particles against the glass with a dry hard tool.
2. Use a cleaner suited to the surface
Use the product and amount allowed by the window or film maker. Protect the surrounding frame and sill from drips.
Don’t make vinegar, alcohol or ammonia your default for every surface. A film or coated pane may have restrictions even when an ordinary pane does not.
3. Wipe in overlapping passes
Work across the pane in overlapping passes with a soft cloth or an approved squeegee. Keep the tool clean between passes so you don’t drag residue back across the surface.
Clean one manageable area at a time. If the cleaner dries before you can remove it, move to a shaded pane or reduce the area you’re working on.
4. Dry edges and inspect
Dry the edges and sill with the clean finishing cloth. Look at the pane from a different angle to see remaining streaks.
Don’t scrape a stubborn spot with a razor blade, steel wool or an abrasive pad. Check the surface instructions and choose an appropriate next step.

Can I clean tinted windows the same way?
Use the film maker’s instructions. Cleaner ingredients and tools suitable for ordinary glass may be unsuitable for film or coated glass.
Is newspaper better than a cloth?
A clean, soft, lint-free cloth is a good starting point if your window’s care instructions allow it. Andersen advises against newspaper for its products. Check your window’s care instructions before trying it.
How should I clean high-rise exterior windows?
Don’t lean out or stand on furniture to reach exterior glass. If a pane can’t be reached safely from indoors, ask your building management or a suitable window-cleaning professional about safe access.
