Guide to Seeking Elderly Care in Singapore

As our loved ones age, their needs change, requiring more focused care. For example, if a once-active parent starts struggling with everyday tasks like gardening or remembering appointments, it’s a sign they may need extra support.

Elderly care includes help with daily activities, medical needs, and emotional support. Key signs to watch for include mobility issues, memory lapses, and difficulty managing routine tasks. Recognizing these needs early ensures that your loved one receives the right care and support.

Understanding the Importance of Elderly Care

Elderly care, also known as senior care or geriatric care, is a crucial component of healthcare systems designed to address the unique needs of aging individuals. It includes a wide range of services, including nursing home care, home health care, assisted living, and hospice care. As Singapore faces a rapidly aging population, the need for quality elderly care services is more important than ever.

Families must assess the level of care their loved ones require, whether it’s occasional help with daily tasks or full-time medical and emotional support. Recognizing mobility issues, memory lapses, or difficulty in performing routine activities early can make a significant difference in enhancing their quality of life.

What Types of Elderly Care Services are Available in Singapore?

In Singapore, families can choose from 4 main types of elderly care options, each tailored to meet different needs and circumstances.

This section covers these services clearly, such as:

  • Part-Time Care: Ideal for families who need occasional assistance.
  • Full-Time Care: Comprehensive support for those who require continuous care.
  • Specialized Care: Focused on specific health conditions, such as dementia or Parkinson’s disease.
  • Home-Based Care: Allows seniors to remain in their familiar environment while receiving professional care.

What are the types of Specialized Elderly Care Services?

  1. Nursing Home Care: Nursing homes provide 24/7 comprehensive elderly care services, including medical supervision, physical therapy, and emotional support. They are ideal for seniors with chronic health conditions or those recovering from surgery.
  2. Home-Based Care: Home-based care services allow seniors to stay in their familiar environment while receiving professional caregiving. These services include assistance with daily living, medication management, and companionship.
  3. Dementia Care: Specialized dementia care is tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals suffering from memory-related conditions. Caregivers are trained to provide structured routines, mental stimulation, and emotional support.
  4. Respite Care: “Respite care offers temporary relief to family caregivers, allowing them to take a break while ensuring their loved ones receive professional and compassionate care.
  5. Hospice and Palliative Care: Hospice care focuses on providing comfort and support for elderly individuals with terminal illnesses, ensuring dignity and peace in their final days.

How to Choose the Right Elderly Caregiver?

Selecting the right elderly caregiver is crucial for the well-being of your loved one.

Here are eight simple steps to help you select the right in-home caregiver for Elders:

  1. Understand your loved one’s needs.
  2. List the caregiver’s tasks.
  3. Check skills and experience.
  4. Ensure personality compatibility.
  5. Verify references and background.
  6. Match schedules and availability.
  7. Decide between agency or independent caregiver.
  8. Monitor performance and satisfaction

These steps will help you choose the right caregiver, who meets your loved one’s needs and helps them feel safe and supported.

What Financial Assistance Options does the Singapore Government offer for Caregiving Costs?

Singapore Government offers various grants and subsidies to help ease the burden of caregiving costs. This section details the different financial assistance options available, such as the Home Caregiving Grant (HCG) and other government subsidies. Additionally, it offers advice on budgeting for elderly care and tips on maximizing available resources.

How do Caregivers Improve the Quality of Life for Seniors?

Elderly care isn’t just about meeting physical needs, it’s also about ensuring emotional well-being and happiness. Beyond basic care, enhancing the quality of life for elderly individuals is key to their happiness and well-being.

Caregivers Improve the Quality of Life for Seniors by incorporating activities such as:

  • Community Engagement: Encouraging participation in senior centers and volunteer programs.
  • Cultural and Recreational Activities: Organizing outings, musical sessions, or storytelling to bring joy and excitement.
  • Personalized Care Plans: Tailoring care services to individual preferences and needs can greatly enhance their sense of fulfillment.

What are the key geriatric-specific components of quality elderly care?

To ensure elderly individuals receive the best possible care, it’s essential to incorporate geriatric-specific elements such as:

  • Mobility Aids: Devices like wheelchairs, walkers, and grab bars can help maintain independence and reduce the risk of falls.
  • Mental Stimulation: Activities such as puzzles, reading, or group discussions promote cognitive health.
  • Social Interaction: Senior activity centers and community programs provide opportunities for social engagement, combating loneliness and isolation.
  • Physical Activity: Low-impact exercises such as yoga, tai chi, and walking enhance physical health and overall well-being.

Yes, you can request the same caregiver, provided that they are available. This is why we ask our customers if they wish to potentially engage our caregiving services on a recurring basis, so that we can match them with a caregiver that has the same availability in the following weeks, in case they wish to keep having the same caregiver for their loved ones.
Definitely! To ensure that you find the best fit for your caregiving needs, here are some factors apart from experience to consider:

– Whether the caregiver is able to communicate in the same language(s) as your elderly parent
– Ratings and reviews of the caregiver
– Whether the caregiver has handled a similar caregiving situation to your current needs. Most importantly, once you have decided on a caregiver, try it out and see if the caregiver is a good fit for your elderly parent. Sometimes, a candidate may sound great on paper but you can only find the most suitable caregiver once you try it out. Our Home Advisors are here to help with the caregiving selection process!
As of March 2023, the Home Caregiving Grant has been enhanced by the government to better assist families requiring assistance for care-related expenses.

The Home Caregiving Grant aids families with a monthly payout of $250 or $400 in cash to Singaporeans who provide care for their loved ones requiring assisted daily living with moderate to severe disabilities. Speak to our agent to find out if you are eligible. You can read more about how to apply for HCG with the government here!
