Can your aircon filter be washed?
Check the model manual before taking the filter to the sink. A frame that looks removable doesn’t prove that every layer inside it is washable.
Your unit may have a washable mesh filter and a separate insert with different instructions. That smaller insert might need replacement rather than rinsing.

What should you prepare before cleaning?
Read the removal instructions first. Find out where the filter sits, how the cover opens and whether any additional inserts must stay dry.
Have a soft cloth and a clean place ready for the filter. Prepare water or cleaning products only if the manual permits them. Don’t mix cleaning products.
Check access too. A wall-mounted unit above a bed or cabinet can be awkward to reach. Don’t stand on the furniture or stretch while holding an open cover.

How do you clean a washable aircon filter in six steps?
The steps below apply only to a filter that your manufacturer identifies as washable. Stop if the cover resists opening or the filter doesn’t release as described.
1. Switch off and isolate the power
Turn the unit off. Then disconnect or isolate its power using the method in the manual before opening the cover.
Don’t rely only on the remote-control setting. Keep your hands dry, and don’t touch wiring or electrical components. If you can’t identify the correct isolation method, ask a qualified service provider for help.
2. Open the cover and remove the filter carefully
Follow the model’s release instructions. Support the cover if the instructions require it, and avoid forcing clips or hinges.

Set any separate inserts aside and keep track of where they fit. Check their care instructions before cleaning them.
3. Check the condition before washing
Look for tears, a distorted frame or other visible damage. Cleaning won’t repair a damaged filter.
Handle accumulated dust gently. Don’t shake the filter across the bedroom or brush debris towards an open aircon unit. Move it carefully to the cleaning area.
If the filter is damaged, check the correct replacement part before using the unit again. Avoid cutting an unrelated material to fit the frame.
4. Wash using the method your manual permits
Rinse the washable filter gently where instructed. Use a mild or neutral detergent only if the manufacturer allows it, and follow any stated water-temperature limit.
Use only the cleaner and tools your manual permits. Don’t force dirt out with a high-pressure jet.
Wash the removable filter away from the unit. Don’t spray water into the fins, fan or electronics behind it.
5. Let the filter dry fully
Place the filter somewhere clean and allow it to dry as the manufacturer directs. Don’t reinstall it while it’s wet.
LG’s guidance calls for drying the relevant washable filters in shade. Don’t speed up drying with a hairdryer or direct heat unless your model’s instructions expressly allow it.
Choose a time when you can leave the aircon off long enough for the filter to dry. Don’t rush drying because you need the room cooled.
6. Refit the filter and check the unit
Return the dry filter to its correct position and close the cover as instructed. Restore power only after everything is fitted.
Check that the cover is secure and the unit operates normally. Stop and arrange a check if you notice a warning, unusual noise or a fitting problem.
Reset a filter reminder only as the manual directs, after completing the required care. Resetting it doesn’t repair a fault.

How often should you clean your aircon filter?
Use the manufacturer’s schedule as your starting point, then inspect the actual filter. Usage and the conditions in your home can change how quickly dirt builds up.
NEA’s household energy tips recommend inspecting aircon filters monthly and cleaning or replacing them when necessary. Inspection doesn’t mean every filter needs washing that day.
Daikin’s general maintenance guidance recommends cleaning filters every two weeks. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a rule for every aircon. Your model’s instructions still govern the method and timing, especially for special filters.
Note the date and what you found. An inspection may show that the filter doesn’t need washing yet.

Does haze change what the filter can do?
For haze, check your model’s filtration specification. Cleaning the existing filter does not make it suitable for removing fine airborne particles.

What can you clean yourself, and what needs servicing?
You can wipe the outer casing and care for approved removable filters as the manual directs. Keep liquids away from controls and openings, and leave internal cleaning to a qualified service provider.
Leave internal electrical work and work that requires dismantling to a qualified service provider. Don’t insert a brush through the opening to reach the fan or coil.
If the unit still has weak airflow, leaks or makes an unusual noise after correct filter care, explain the symptoms when arranging aircon servicing. A service provider can assess what work is needed.
Weak cooling doesn’t establish that refrigerant needs topping up. Haze exposure doesn’t establish that a chemical wash is needed either. Ask for the reason behind a recommended service before confirming it.

What if the filter or cover won’t fit back?
Don’t force it or restore power with the fitting incomplete. Compare the filter’s position with your removal photo and the manual’s refitting instructions. If it still won’t seat correctly, leave the unit off and ask an appropriate service provider for help. Don’t dismantle more parts to make it fit.
Can you use the aircon while its filter is drying?
Don’t run the unit without its filter unless the manufacturer expressly permits that mode of use. Plan the cleaning so the filter can dry fully before you need to restart the aircon. Follow the refitting instructions and check that the cover closes correctly.
Does cleaning the filter remove a musty smell?
It may not address the source. A lingering smell can need further assessment, especially if it returns after routine care. Describe when you notice it and what you’ve already cleaned. Don’t spray fragrance into the unit or assume a particular treatment will remove the odour.
Should you add a HEPA filter to your aircon during haze?

Do you still need servicing if you clean the filters?
