Types of aircon services

1. General servicing

General servicing is the most basic type among all the different types of aircon services. But don’t overlook it, because when done regularly, it can save you both money and effort.

Our general aircon servicing process includes the following:

  • Dismantle and clean the front panel and cover to remove excess dust trapped in the air inlet.
  • Clean air filter to remove impurities and improve air quality.
  • Clean the vacuum evaporator coil to ensure efficient air flow.
  • Vacuum blower parts to remove dirt and mould that causes rancid and weak airflow.
  • Vacuum drainage pipe to remove rust and harmful bacteria build-up clogging the drain.
  • Wash and vacuum water tray to remove dust and dirt.
  • Perform an air-conditioner test run to ensure all components are functioning smoothly.
  • Perform a gas pressure test to check coolant level in the air-conditioner.

Understanding the different aircon parts and their functions is crucial for effective maintenance, as each component plays a vital role in the overall performance of your unit. Regular servicing helps ensure these parts continue to work efficiently.

If the last time you’ve serviced your aircon units was less than 6 months ago, you can opt for a general servicing to continue the maintenance of your units.

Book a quarterly or triannually servicing package and you won’t have to worry about forgetting to book a session. Plus, our aircon servicing packages come at discounted rates of up to 32% off.

2. Chemical wash

Essentially, a chemical wash is a more thorough version of general servicing. This would be suitable for those who haven’t had an aircon servicing done in more than 6-9 months.

A chemical wash involves using a chemical-based solution to clean the air filters, fan, and cooling coil. The blower will be dismantled and taken out to clean as well. Dirt accumulates in the blower and hence, it is advisable to do a chemical wash once a year, for those who use your aircon frequently.

3. Chemical overhaul

Take it another step further. A chemical overhaul is even more intensive than a chemical wash.

During a chemical overhaul session, the entire unit is dismantled and parts such as the drainage pipes, heat exchange coils, and blower wheels are thoroughly cleaned.

This would be for those who haven’t had servicing done in more than 9 months and are facing some common aircon issues such as weird noises or leaking water from aircon.

4. Condenser dry cleaning

In order for the aircon to work properly, the condenser also has a part to play. It is normally out of sight but it’s still important to clean it regularly.

The condenser contains coils that help to move heat out of your home and replace it with cool air. Over time, dirt, dust, and debris accumulate in the coils. Then, it won’t be able to effectively and efficiently remove heat from your home.

If your condenser isn’t working well, all the aircon units in your home will be affected. Hence, it is important not to neglect regular maintenance of the condenser as well.

5. Gas top-up

If you find that your aircon isn’t cooling the room fast or well enough, the compressor might need a gas top-up. But there is no visual meter to show when the gas levels are low, so the best indicator is whether your units are able to cool the room properly.

Our aircon technicians will be able to advise whether you need a gas top-up when you arrange for aircon servicing. You can then decide if you want to go ahead with the top-up.

That being said, allowing your units to run with low gas levels is harmful to your units, and also the environment.

6. Air filtration installation

Especially for those who are sensitive to dust or have kids/elderly at home, you might want to replace your filters regularly to make the air that comes out from your aircon cleaner. This simple step can significantly improve your indoor air quality and help avoid issues such as your aircon compressor not working properly, which can be caused by clogged or dirty filters.

Rather than doing it on your own, you can book our air filtration installation service as an add-on. Our technicians can get it done for you when they come for aircon servicing or other services.

Which Aircon Type Is Best for Your Singapore Home?

Choosing the right aircon type depends on your property, budget, and cooling requirements. Here is a quick guide based on the most common Singapore housing situations.

HDB 2-Room to 3-Room Flat

A single-split or dual-split wall-mounted system is the most practical and cost-effective choice. These units cool individual rooms efficiently without taking up floor space. Budget around $800 to $1,500 for a single-split inverter system with installation.

HDB 4-Room to 5-Room and Executive Flats

A multi-split system with one outdoor unit connected to three or four indoor units is the standard setup. This avoids cluttering the exterior wall with multiple condensers. For a 4-unit multi-split system, expect to budget $3,000 to $5,000 including installation.

Private Condominium

Check whether your development uses a centralised fan coil unit system or individual split systems. Newer condos with FCU infrastructure require you to use the building’s chilled water system. For condos with individual systems, wall-mounted multi-split is the most common choice.

Landed Property

Ducted or centralised systems offer whole-home cooling with a clean, vent-only look. These require false ceiling space for ductwork installation and represent a higher upfront investment but deliver the most even cooling and quietest operation. Multi-split systems are an alternative if false ceiling installation is not feasible.

Short-Term Rental or Temporary Situation

Portable aircon units require no installation and can move with you. They are less efficient than split systems but ideal for tenants on short leases who cannot modify the property.

For aircon servicing across all system types from wall-mounted splits to ducted and FCU units, Helpling’s background-checked technicians provide general servicing, chemical wash, and repairs at competitive rates.

FAQs

Q: What is the most common type of aircon in Singapore?

The wall-mounted split system is by far the most popular, found in over 80% of Singapore homes. It consists of an indoor unit mounted on the wall and an outdoor compressor installed on the exterior.

Its popularity comes from efficient cooling performance, quiet indoor operation, competitive pricing, and suitability for HDB flats and condominiums where space for large systems is limited. Inverter models of the split system have become the standard choice, offering 30 to 50% energy savings compared to non-inverter units.

Q: What is the difference between split aircon and window aircon?

A split aircon separates the noisy compressor outdoors from the quiet indoor unit, resulting in lower noise levels and better aesthetics. A window aircon houses all components in a single box installed in a window opening, making it noisier but cheaper and easier to install.

Split systems are more energy efficient and offer better air distribution, which is why they dominate the Singapore market. Window units are mainly used as a budget option for single rooms or in older buildings where split system installation is not practical.

Q: How much does aircon installation cost in Singapore?

Installation costs vary by system type. A single-split wall-mounted unit typically costs $200 to $600 for installation on top of the unit price, depending on piping length and trunking requirements. Multi-split systems with three to four indoor units cost $800 to $1,500 for installation.

Ducted or centralised systems start from $3,000 for installation alone due to ductwork and false ceiling requirements. Always get at least two to three quotes from licensed contractors and confirm that the quote includes piping, trunking, drainage, electrical wiring, and bracket installation.

Q: Which aircon type is most energy efficient?

Inverter wall-mounted split systems with 5-tick NEA energy labels are the most efficient option for most Singapore homes. They adjust compressor speed continuously to maintain the set temperature rather than switching on and off, reducing energy consumption by 30 to 50%.

For whole-home cooling, centralised FCU systems connected to a building chilled water plant can also be highly efficient because industrial chillers operate at scale. Check the NEA energy label before purchasing, the difference between a 2-tick and 5-tick unit can amount to $200 or more per year in electricity savings.

Q: Can I install a split aircon in an HDB flat?

Yes, split systems are the standard aircon type for HDB flats. HDB regulations allow installation of wall-mounted split systems with the outdoor compressor placed on the designated aircon ledge.

You need to ensure the condenser is placed on the approved ledge and that piping is routed through the designated aircon pipe hole. For BTO flats, aircon piping concealment within the wall may already be provisioned. Always engage a licensed aircon installer familiar with HDB regulations.

Q: What type of aircon is best for a bedroom?

A wall-mounted split system with inverter technology is the best choice for bedrooms. Inverter units operate more quietly than non-inverter models because the compressor runs at variable speeds rather than cycling on and off.

Look for units with a dedicated sleep mode that gradually raises the temperature overnight for comfort and energy savings. For a standard Singapore bedroom of 10 to 15 square metres, a 9,000 BTU unit is typically sufficient.

Q: How often should I service my aircon regardless of type?

All aircon types in Singapore should be serviced every three to four months due to the heavy usage driven by year-round tropical heat. General aircon servicing includes filter cleaning, coil vacuuming, and drainage flushing.

A chemical wash is recommended annually for units used daily, and a chemical overhaul every two to three years for deeper cleaning. Regular servicing prevents common issues like water leaking, reduced cooling, and higher electricity consumption. Learn more about the different types of aircon services to understand which maintenance your unit needs.

Q: Is a portable aircon worth it in Singapore?

Portable aircon units serve a specific purpose, they are ideal for tenants on short leases, temporary cooling during aircon installation or servicing, or supplementary cooling in rooms without existing aircon infrastructure.

However, they are significantly less energy efficient than split systems, produce more noise, and require a window or opening for the exhaust hose. For permanent cooling in Singapore, a wall-mounted split system offers far better performance, lower running costs, and quieter operation. Portable units work best as a stopgap rather than a primary cooling solution.
