Aircon Not Cold? What to Check Before Booking Help

The aircon is running, but the bedroom still feels warm. Before assuming it needs a gas top-up, check the cooling mode, temperature setting and airflow.

If your aircon is not cold, the settings, a dirty filter or an open window may be part of the problem. Warm air alone won’t tell you which part, if any, has failed.

Use the table below to choose the checks that fit your symptoms. Stop if you notice leaking water, ice or an electrical warning, and leave internal components to a qualified service provider.

What you’ll need for the checks

Have the remote control, the model’s operating manual and a place to record what you notice. You won’t need refrigerant tools or access to internal wiring.

Check what you can reach safely. If you can’t access the filter securely or find the power-isolation instructions, leave that part to a service provider.

Start with what you can see and feel

What you’re noticing Start here What to tell the service provider
Air is moving, but it isn’t cool Check the mode and temperature setting Whether every room is affected or only one
Very little air comes out Check the visible inlet and your model’s filter-care instructions When the airflow became weak and when filters were last cleaned
Air feels cool, but the room stays warm Check open doors, windows and room conditions Whether this is a new problem or the room has always cooled poorly
Water drips indoors, ice appears, or a warning keeps returning Stop ordinary troubleshooting and arrange an assessment The location, error code and any safe photograph

Check the mode, temperature and room first

1. Make sure the unit is in cooling mode

Check the display against your remote-control manual. Fan mode moves air without providing cooling. Dry mode has a different purpose, so don’t assume it will behave like Cool mode.

Select Cool mode and a temperature below the current room temperature. Check whether a timer or operating setting is changing the unit’s behaviour.

Symbols and controls differ between models. Use your manual rather than guessing from a generic remote diagram. Our dry-mode aircon guide explains that setting separately.

2. Check whether the room is losing cooled air

Close the windows and doors to the area you’re cooling. If a bedroom door opens into an uncooled hallway, the aircon may be working against a larger space than you expect.

Only handle a filter that your manual describes as user-accessible. Switch off and isolate power using the manufacturer’s instructions before opening the cover.

Read the care instructions before washing anything. A washable mesh filter and a separate deodorising insert can need different treatment. Never spray water into the mounted unit.

Follow our aircon-cleaning guide for the filter-type decision and cleaning sequence. Refit a washable filter only when it is fully dry, as the manual directs.

If airflow stays weak after the filter has been properly cleaned, arrange a check. Washing it again won’t fix a fault elsewhere in the unit.

If you’d rather have someone check the unit, Helpling’s aircon services include general servicing and an AC Diagnostic Service. Tell the provider about the weak airflow so you can choose the appropriate appointment.

Compare one room with the rest of the system

For a multi-split system, note which indoor units are affected. Is only your bedroom warm, or are the living room and other bedrooms struggling too?

Check the normal operating settings for each affected room. Record which units were running at the same time and whether the problem began suddenly.

These notes help the technician investigate, but they won’t identify a failed part on their own. Don’t open the outdoor unit, touch wiring or try to measure refrigerant pressure.

When should you stop troubleshooting?

Arrange an assessment if you see ice, recurring indoor leakage, persistent errors or cooling that doesn’t improve after the appropriate basic checks.

If there’s smoke, a burning smell or water near electrical parts, keep clear and stop using the unit. Isolate power only if you can do so safely. Don’t keep resetting a tripping breaker.

Ice isn’t proof that a chemical wash or gas top-up is needed. Mitsubishi Electric Singapore identifies more than one possible cause, including insufficient refrigerant and dirty filters, fans or coils.

For dripping indoors, use our aircon water-leakage guide. Describe what you can see and let the technician identify the cause before recommending treatment.

Does an aircon that isn’t cold need a gas top-up?

Not automatically. Settings, airflow and room conditions can also affect cooling.

Mitsubishi Electric Singapore explains that low refrigerant can result from an installation undercharge or a leak. Where there’s a leak, adding refrigerant alone doesn’t solve the problem; the leak needs locating and repairing.

Ask what was checked and why the proposed work fits the findings. Avoid treating a top-up as a recurring household maintenance task or trying refrigerant work yourself.

You can arrange refrigerant top-ups, diagnostics and cleaning through Helpling’s aircon services. Start with an assessment so the recommended work addresses the cause of poor cooling.

What should you prepare before booking?

Before booking, make a short note of the following:

  • The brand and model number, if you can read them safely.
  • Which rooms or indoor units are affected.
  • Whether air is weak, warm, or cool but insufficient for the room.
  • Any displayed error code, leakage or ice.
  • When the problem started and what normal settings you’ve checked.
  • The date and type of the last service, if known.

For an HDB flat or condo with several indoor units, tell the provider how many need checking. Ask what the assessment covers and whether any proposed additional work needs a separate quote.

Questions you may still have

Why is my aircon suddenly not cold?

Start with the display and the symptom. A changed setting and a fault can both present as poor cooling. If the appropriate basic checks don’t help, record what changed and arrange an assessment.

Should I book routine servicing or diagnosis?

If poor cooling remains after the appropriate checks, request Helpling’s AC Diagnostic Service and share your fault note. The assessment helps determine the further work; routine cleaning isn’t a guaranteed repair.

For planned upkeep without a current fault, discuss general aircon servicing and confirm the maintenance scope for your units.

Should I set the lowest temperature to fix weak cooling?

A lower setting won’t clear a blockage or fix a fault. Check Cool mode and the temperature setting, then use the steps that match what you’re noticing.

How can I keep track of maintenance afterwards?

Record filter checks and professional service dates separately. Our aircon servicing-frequency guide explains how manufacturer guidance and usage help you plan the next check.

Book a check if the room still will not cool

If the basic checks haven’t helped, you can book Helpling’s AC Diagnostic Service. The service is designed to assess aircon issues and advise which further work is appropriate.

Helpling’s AC Diagnostic Service starts from S\$60. The diagnostic fee is fully discounted when you book the recommended repair through Helpling. Confirm the quote and applicable conditions when booking.

Helpling also offers general servicing, chemical cleaning, condenser cleaning and refrigerant services. The assessment helps you choose the work your unit needs.

Book your aircon appointment with Helpling and share your fault note. If you mainly need a maintenance plan afterwards, use the servicing-frequency guide to prepare your next questions.
