Aircon Leaking Water – Characteristics and How To Solve It

A drip from the aircon onto your bedroom floor needs attention. Switch off the affected unit using its normal controls if you can do so safely, and arrange a check. Keep clear of water near electrical parts or sockets.

An aircon leaking water indoors needs a different response from condensation on outdoor piping. Where the water appears can help a technician investigate, but it won’t tell you the cause on its own.

The table below explains what you can observe safely and what to do next. Leave the covers and internal drain pipe alone; a clear description of the leak is more useful than taking the unit apart.

Where is the water coming from?

Daikin Singapore’s FAQ distinguishes indoor leakage associated with drainage problems from condensation at outdoor piping connections. Don’t extend that explanation to every unexplained outdoor leak.

What to do first when water leaks indoors

  1. Stop the affected aircon using its normal controls. Follow the manual’s shutdown and safe isolation instructions.
  2. Keep clear of water near electrical equipment. Don’t touch wet switches or repeatedly reset a breaker.
  3. Move vulnerable belongings only if the area is safe. Protect the dry surrounding floor without putting anything into the unit.
  4. Note where water appears and whether there is a warning code, ice or weak cooling. A photograph can help if taken safely.

If the unit sits above your bed, resist climbing onto furniture for a closer look. Note what you can see from a safe position and leave the covers in place.

You can arrange Helpling’s AC Diagnostic Service if you need help assessing the leak. Tell the provider that water is dripping indoors, rather than booking a treatment based only on a guessed cause.

Why might an aircon leak water?

Drainage problems

An aircon needs to drain the water produced during cooling. A blockage or another drainage problem can allow water to appear where it shouldn’t.

Daikin recommends a qualified service technician for indoor water leakage. Leave internal drain clearing to the technician; don’t push wire or pour chemicals into the unit.

Ice that later melts

Ice can be linked to several causes. Mitsubishi Electric Singapore identifies insufficient refrigerant and dirty filters, fans or coils among the possibilities.

clogged drain line

Ice alone doesn’t tell you whether the unit needs a gas top-up or chemical wash. A technician should assess the cause before you approve the work.

Leaks that keep returning

If the leak returns, tell the technician about any recent installation or servicing and whether the dripping has changed.

Tell the technician what you can observe so they can check your unit and its drainage arrangement.

Can you fix the leak by cleaning the filter?

A clean filter may help airflow, but it won’t tell you whether the drain is blocked or the leak has been fixed.

If the unit is leaking or iced up, deal with the fault first. Once the fault has been assessed and it’s safe to resume routine care, our aircon-cleaning guide explains how to check whether a filter is washable and dry it before refitting.

Don’t spray the indoor unit, flush it with a household mixture or try to clean electrical components. Only clean the parts and use the methods your manual allows.

What about a chemical wash or gas top-up?

A chemical wash or gas top-up isn’t the automatic next step for a leaking aircon. Ask the technician to identify the fault before recommending either.

You can book diagnostics, general servicing, chemical cleaning and refrigerant services through Helpling’s aircon services. Ask why the recommended work suits your unit and what the quote includes.

Ask the provider to explain the proposed chemical-cleaning scope and why it matches the diagnosed fault. Find out what’s causing the leak before agreeing to a cleaning treatment.

What to tell the technician

Record the model if you can read it safely, the affected room and where the water appears. Note whether it happens during use, after switching off or alongside an error or ice.

Include the last service date and any previous treatment. For a multi-split system, say whether only one indoor unit leaks.

If cooling is also poor, use the aircon-not-cold guide to describe airflow and room behaviour. Don’t continue operating a leaking unit just to complete those checks.

Common questions

Should I switch it back on to see whether the dripping stopped?

Keep the affected unit off pending assessment. Don’t restart a wet or faulty unit just to reproduce the leak for the technician; report when it happened and where the water appeared.

frozen coil

A towel or bucket doesn’t fix the cause or make wet electrical areas safe.

Is outdoor dripping always normal?

No. Condensation can explain some outdoor piping drips during cooling. If you can’t identify the location safely, water causes damage, or the pattern has changed, ask for an assessment.

dirty air filter

Should I pour bleach or vinegar into the drain?

Don’t improvise a drain-clearing procedure. Follow the equipment instructions and leave internal drainage work to the appropriate technician.

Book a check for your leaking aircon

Share your leak note when booking Helpling’s AC Diagnostic Service. Diagnosis starts from S$60. The diagnostic fee is fully discounted when you book the recommended repair through Helpling. Confirm the applicable conditions and quote.

Ask the provider whether your aircon needs maintenance or repair, what the work involves and what it will cost.

Book your aircon appointment with Helpling once you’ve confirmed the proposed work and quote. After the fault is resolved, the servicing-frequency guide can help you plan routine care separately.
